The Difference Between Cake and Muffin

Have you ever wondered why a cake and muffin are considered different from each other?  We're about to go in the trenches and find out what the differences are when comparing the two.

Looking at the history of the American-style muffin we find they are not made with yeast dough like it's English counterpart.  We find that it uses a leaving agent like baking soda or baking power.  But what does it mean to us and the finished result?  Well we get to classes of muffin one bread like and one cake like.

Preparation of the muffin can have it lean more towards a bread than a cake.  Each type has a unique way of mixing the batter.  Less butter and sugar gives the muffin a more bread like consistency.  More butter and sugar will give it more of a cake like consistency.  Here's where we have to dive into cake and muffin facts to truly know the difference between the two:   Traditional cakes do not contain nuts and fruit. Muffins are often made with nuts and fruit.

Cakes can contain yeast and baking powder and for the sake of our discussion we'll stick with the American-style muffin and we know these muffins do not contain yeast of any kind.
When it comes to frosting, cakes are the go to dessert.  Muffins will not have frosting but can be glazed.

What have learned regarding the cake and muffin today?  We know that cake is the sweeter of the two and while the muffin isn't quite bread nor is it quite like cake.  It is an interesting blend of both worlds and let's face it ... Having a muffin for breakfast is the adult compromising with the kid in you because you almost ate but didn't quite eat cake for breakfast.
